Can Patch patch up journalism?

Posted on January 14, 2011

When is the last time you received one (or five) of those free AOL CDs in the mail? Yeah, it’s been a long, long time. But don’t count AOL out just yet. The company has launched the Patch community in 19 U.S. states so far. Patch is a self-described online only source for very local community news. A former colleague of ours who is now running a Patch site termed them “hyper-local.” Another new Patch-er is former Gannett employee Louis Hochman. He says, “I wouldn’t have joined Patch if I didn’t think it was onto something.” We agree. Patch is definitely onto something and AOL could benefit from this venture. We just hope it’s not (another) passing fad.
