Gannett’s design hub strategy moving into implementation

Gannett’s announcement in July about creating regional design hubs for its publications instead of having on site designers at each pub made us a little wary. Ten years ago, print design was a valued asset in newsrooms across the country. Our fear was that designers in these design hubs would cease to be designers and become paginators. There is a big difference between the two. Designers use their creativity to visually explain stories to readers while paginators basically make things fit. While we’re still not sure how this idea will work out, here’s an update on Gannett’s new strategy via the Society for News Design.
