Paper Cuts takes hiatus

Posted on January 14, 2011

Maybe we are (re)starting Twist at the right time. It looks like Paper Cuts, a site that for more than three years reported consistently and ruthlessly on newspaper layoffs and buyouts, is taking a break with the new year. The site notes that the number of nationwide layoffs decreased dramatically in 2010 compared with 2008 and 2009. More than 14,000 newspaper jobs were lost in both 2008 and 2009, but not even 3,000 were reported in 2010. There are always two ways of looking at this kind of news. Is the economy looking up and layoffs are slowing down or are newspapers now just down to the very bare bones of their staffs where they can somehow continue to operate? We still recommend looking at figures over the last three years from Paper Cuts. However, we’ll try to take over where they have left off.
