Facebook Places edging Foursquare and Gowalla

Facebook Places, a location-based service where Facebook users can check in to their current whereabouts, seems to be edging similar services such as Foursquare and Gowalla. While Foursquare went from 2 percent growth to 9 percent growth in the last year, it hasn’t grown in the last quarter. Furthermore, a recent survey of 8,000 U.S. businesses by MerchantCircle suggests that 32 percent of businesses are already using Facebook Places and 12 percent more plan to promote their business with it in the coming months. This is good news for Places since it was only launched last August, but bad news for other location-based services.
