Facebook acquires Gowalla; say goodbye to Gowalla

Posted on December 6, 2011

Facebook has acquired the location-based service Gowalla for an undisclosed amount of money. When it was first announced, Peter Cashmore of Mashable wrote for CNN Tech that this move would almost certainly be bad news for Gowalla users because Facebook rarely keeps a service intact after it acquires it. His prediction was confirmed in the update of this story. “UPDATE 2:30 p.m. ET: Gowalla has confirmed in a blog post that its service will wind down by the end of January.” So what is Facebook’s intention? Perhaps the network is trying to get rid of the geolocation competition for its Facebook Places. Who  knows? We do want to note that all Gowalla users’ information now belongs to Facebook and Gowalla staff will reportedly work on Facebook’s newer timeline feature, which could use the help.
