Tampa Tribune, sister papers begin lay off of 165 staffers

Posted on December 13, 2011

Here we go again. Tampa Tribune and its sister publications started the lay off of 165 staffers yesterday. The cuts comprise a 16 percent reduction in workforce combined. Tampa Bay Online reported that 80 percent of those affected were notified yesterday and that no cuts were made to the TV broadcast staff. Sadly, this is the same old story. Finances became a problem, furloughs were implemented to offset the problem and it wasn’t enough. Tampa Tribune executives said they have “reworked” the organization’s finances. We’re just sad that the “reworking” had to include more job losses.
